    Modeling Solder Ball Array Interconnects for Power Module Optimization

    PowerSynth is a software platform that can co-optimize power modules utilizing a 2D topology and wire bond interconnects. The novel 3D architectures being proposed at the University of Arkansas utilize solder ball interconnects instead of wire bonds. Therefore, they currently cannot be optimized using PowerSynth. This paper examines methods to accurately model the parasitic inductance of solder balls and ball grid arrays so they may be implemented into software for optimization. Proposed mathematical models are validated against ANSYS Electromagnetics Suite simulations. A comparison of the simulated data shows that mathematical models are well suited for implementation into optimization software platforms. Experimental measurements proved to be inconclusive and necessitate future work

    Social Media has grown from an auxiliary chapter in a marketing text to an entire course in the curriculum, an undergraduate major, or a MBA specialty. The controversy now appears to be the extent of the coverage of the Social Media area. The challenge in examining social media’s role in the business curriculum is that there is a lack of empirical research on this subject. The purpose of this panel is to undertake an exploratory review of how social media has been utilized in the business curriculum of participants’ schools in response to the demands of the changing business landscape. This panel seeks to explore the current level of social media integration into the business school curriculum and effective use in pedagogy. We seek to confer with other educators to determine: 1. If a certificate or degree in social media at either the undergraduate or graduate level is currently offered or being considered as a future strategic initiative. 2. The extent of social media implementation into the curriculum and pedagogy? 3. The current status of assessment of the effectiveness of giving students the requisite skills to be successful in the work place and aware of online security? 4. What instruments are used to evaluate a) the effectiveness of the pedagogy or b) ascertain if the students feel it assisted in job placement and increased their confidence in applying social media in the workplace? This panel seeks to determine and share knowledge regarding best practices for incorporating social media into the higher education curriculum

    Relevant Spatial Scales of Chemical Variation in Aplysina aerophoba

    Understanding the scale at which natural products vary the most is critical because it sheds light on the type of factors that regulate their production. The sponge Aplysina aerophoba is a common Mediterranean sponge inhabiting shallow waters in the Mediterranean and its area of influence in Atlantic Ocean. This species contains large concentrations of brominated alkaloids (BAs) that play a number of ecological roles in nature. Our research investigates the ecological variation in BAs of A. aerophoba from a scale of hundred of meters to thousand kilometers. We used a nested design to sample sponges from two geographically distinct regions (Canary Islands and Mediterranean, over 2500 km), with two zones within each region (less than 50 km), two locations within each zone (less than 5 km), and two sites within each location (less than 500 m). We used high-performance liquid chromatography to quantify multiple BAs and a spectrophotometer to quantify chlorophyll a (Chl a). Our results show a striking degree of variation in both natural products and Chl a content. Significant variation in Chl a content occurred at the largest and smallest geographic scales. The variation patterns of BAs also occurred at the largest and smallest scales, but varied depending on which BA was analyzed. Concentrations of Chl a and isofistularin-3 were negatively correlated, suggesting that symbionts may impact the concentration of some of these compounds. Our results underline the complex control of the production of secondary metabolites, with factors acting at both small and large geographic scales affecting the production of multiple secondary metabolites

    Public Perceptions of Ocean Health and Marine Protection: Drivers of Support for Oregon’s Marine Reserves

    Over the past several decades marine conservation policy has supported the implementation of protected areas in ocean and coastal environments to restrict some elements of human use for ecological benefits. The appropriate extent of protection and the allowable uses are often the subject of public debate about marine protected area policy. Local community dynamics around marine protected area designation and management have been the subject of much ocean and coastal management social science research. However, broader public opinions and attitudes about marine protected areas are not well understood and are critical for managers seeking to maintain their public trust obligations in environmental management. This paper provides a model for understanding the attitudes and beliefs that foster public support for or opposition to marine protections. We explored the relationships between awareness, attitudes and beliefs towards coastal and marine resource issues and uses, and demographics among a sample of Oregon, USA residents (n = 459), and tested their influence on support for expanding Oregon’s recently established marine reserves. We found that Oregonians have relatively low familiarity with Oregon’s marine reserve system, but that familiarity did not influence public support for Oregon’s marine reserves. Instead public support was lower among coastal residents and those with positive attitudes towards commercial fisheries, and higher for those concerned with the ecological integrity of Oregon’s ocean and supportive of some limits to human uses of the ocean. Our findings highlight the need for managers to engage both coastal communities and the general public to make a case for the value of marine protected areas in safeguarding the public trust

    Immobilization of a Catalytic DNA Molecular Beacon on Au for Pb(II) Detection

    A Pb(II)-specific DNAzyme fluorescent sensor has been modified with a thiol moiety in order to immobilize it on a Au surface. Self-assembly of the DNAzyme is accomplished by first adsorbing the single-thiolated enzyme strand (HS-17E-Dy) followed by adsorption of mercaptohexanol, which serves to displace any Au-N interactions and ensure that DNA is bound only through the Sheadgroup. The preformed self-assembled monolayer is then hybridized with the complementary fluorophorecontaining substrate strand (17DS-Fl). Upon reaction with Pb(II), the substrate strand is cleaved, releasing a fluorescent fragment for detection. Fluorescence intensity may be correlated with original Pb(II) concentration, and a linear calibration was obtained over nearly four decades: 10 μM ≥ [Pb(II)] ≥ 1 nM. The immobilized DNAzyme is a robust system; it may be regenerated after cleavage, allowing multiple sensing cycles. In addition, drying of fully assembled DNAzyme before reaction with Pb(II) does not significantly affect analytical performance. These results demonstrate that, in comparison with solution-based schemes, immobilization of the DNAzyme sensor onto a Au surface lowers the detection limit (from 10 to 1 nM), maintains activity and specificity, and allows sensor regeneration and long-term storage. Realization of Pb(II) detection through an immobilized DNAzyme is the first important step toward creation of a stand-alone, portable Pb(II) detection device such as those immobilizing DNAzyme recognition motifs in the nanofluidic pores of a microfluidic-nanofluidic hybrid multilayer device

    Chronic orthopedic infections are commonly caused by bacterial biofilms, which are recalcitrant to antibiotic treatment. In many cases, the revision procedure for periprosthetic joint infection or trauma cases includes the implantation of antibiotic-loaded bone cement to kill infecting bacteria via the elution of a strong local dose of antibiotic(s) at the site. While many studies have addressed the elution kinetics of both non-absorbable and absorbable bone cements both in vitro and in vivo, the potency of ALBC against pathogenic bacteria after extended implantation time is not clear. In this communication, we use two case studies, a Viridans streptococci infected total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and a MRSA-polymicrobial osteomyelitis of a distal tibial traumatic amputation (TA) to demonstrate that an antibiotic-loaded poly(methyl methacrylate) (ALPMMA) coated intermedullary rod implanted for 117 days (TKA) and three ALPMMA suture-strung beads implanted for 210 days (TA) retained killing ability against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro, despite different clinical efficacies. The TKA infection resolved and the patient progressed to an uneventful second stage. However, the TA infection only resolved after multiple rounds of debridement, IV vancomycin and removal of the PMMA beads and placement of vancomycin and tobramycin loaded calcium sulfate beads.<br/
